PSHE
Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.
Intent
At Lydney C of E Primary School, our PSHE curriculum intends to be accessible to all and ensures that every pupil will know more and understand more about how to play a positive and successful role in our society, both as a child and as an adult in the future. As a result of this they will become healthy, independent and responsible members of society who understand how they are developing personally and socially, and give them confidence to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities and experiences for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. PSHE provides opportunity to weigh up what is fair and unfair in different situations, understanding that justice is fundamental to a democratic society and explore the role of law in maintaining order and resolving conflict. It also questions pupils to reflect on different ideas, opinions, assumptions, beliefs and values when exploring topical and controversial issues and problems.
Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to life at Lydney C of E Primary School and the wider community.
We follow the SCARF curriculum which is a whole school approach to wellbeing and mental health.
Underpinning our PSHE curriculum are our Christian values: trust, friendship, respect, forgiveness, courage and truthfulness and curriculum drivers.
The lessons we teach have an intention of providing a high-quality, coherent and progressive experience of the subject, with scope for cross-curricular learning.
Implementation
The SCARF PSHE program provides a scheme of learning from the Early Years Foundation Stage through to, and including, Year 6.
SCARF, standing for Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship. The scheme is mapped in accordance with the PSHE Association programme of study. It is centered on a values-based ‘Growth Mindset’ approach and is divided into six half-termly units. The units are tailored to each year group and are taught through a spiral curriculum, whereby the themes are explored in greater depth and resources are adapted to each age group to ensure progression. As well as this, we explore PSHE through embedding and promoting our own school Christian values. The values play a key part within our school, especially during collective worship, whereby we relate these values to important events such as anti-bullying week and e-safety week.
Impact
Lydney C of E PSHE teaching provides children with the vocabulary and confidence needed for every child to clearly articulate their thoughts and feelings in an environment of openness, trust and respect, and know when and how they can seek support from others. They will apply their knowledge and understanding of society in their everyday interaction, from the classroom to the wider community they are part of. Our scheme supports the active development of our school culture that prioritise physical and mental health and wellbeing, providing children with the skills they need to evaluate and understand their own wellbeing needs and contribute positively to the wellbeing of those around them. Successful teaching of PSHE has an impact on the whole child, including their academic development and progress, by helping to remove social and emotional barriers to learning and building confidence and self-esteem. Successful teaching of PSHE will raise aspirations for our disadvantaged and vulnerable children, empowering them with skills to overcome barriers they may face.
